Below is a complete list of all the Year Round Events (YREs) and Seasonal Events which are available in British Columbia in 2012. YREs  are  self-guided walks enjoyable every day of the year, Seasonal Events are walks which are available for just a portion of the year. There are several ways to find a particular walk.

Please be reminded that extreme weather conditions can raise the difficulty of routes. Volkssporters should exercise caution under certain weather conditions. Caution is also advised when walking on trails after dusk.

Please note that dogs are permitted on all walks unless otherwise stated in walk information.

Vancouver Island

BRENTWOOD BAY        Jan 1 – Dec 31

TRAIL: 5, 10 km          RATING: 2B, 3B
REGISTRATION: Mon - Wed, Fri: 09:00 - 18:00; Thu: 09:00 - 19:00; Sat: 10:00 - 17:00; Sun: noon - 17:00.  Walk takes in town, waterfront, farmland, forests, and a beautiful view of the bay. REGISTRATION: Daily: 07:30 - dusk. Closed Christmas Day; may close at 18:00 on some statutory holidays. Route is on some country roads but mainly in Hemer Park and on Morden Colliery Trail.  Walk can be done from dawn to dusk. 5 and 10 km walks zigzag through business and residential streets to view the murals for which Chemainus is famous. 10 km walk includes part of Cowichan River Trail. Washrooms available at start/finish.

From the south, Hwy 19A North to Courtenay.  Cross over 17th Street Bridge, turn right.  Follow signs for Comox.  Port Augusta Motel is on left, across from the hospital.  From the north, Hwy 19A South.  Do not cross 17th Street Bridge.  Follow signs for Comox.  Port Augusta Motel is on left. LOCATION: Lewis Centre, 489 Old Island Hwy (V9N 3P5). From the south: On reaching Courtenay, take Cliffe Ave to Fifth St., turn right, over 5th St Bridge. The centre is on left at far end of park. From the north: Centre is located on Old Island Highway, on right by play park. Box is kept in a small storage room across from the office and marked ‘Staff Only.’ Parking is available just north of building.

REGISTRATION: M-F 06:30 - 22:00; Sat. 08:30 - 16:00; Sun.  09:00 - 21:00.
The hours may vary seasonally or on holidays.
Call ahead to confirm hours: 250- 338-5371 or 250-338-1000. Trail goes through residential areas, parks and along estuary nature preserve.  Suitable for wheelchairs or baby strollers but may be difficult through park area. Washrooms available at start/finish.  *

TRAIL: 6, 10 km     RATING:  2B, 3B
REGISTRATION: Daily: 07:00 to dusk. Statutory holidays: 08:00 to dusk.  6 km and one of 10 km routes follow waterfront and main streets of Ladysmith. LAKE COWICHAN               Apr 1 – Sep 30

LOCATION: Riverside Inn Pub, 56 North Shore Rd (250-749-3833) (V0R 2G0). Turn off TransCanada Hwy onto Hwy 18 to Lake Cowichan (about 0.5 hour drive from Duncan). Follow Lake Cowichan Rd to Riverside Inn Pub.
TRAIL: 5, 10 km               RATING: 2B
REGISTRATION: Daily 11:00 - 20:00.  Walk goes through some residential areas and downtown Lake Cowichan, plus some stretches of Trans Canada Trail including two old trestle bridges. Walk showcases lake, river and town. One of three Cowichan Valley walks (082, 136, and 196).  Washrooms at start /finish, in Central Park and in various restaurants and pubs along route.  *

MILL BAY           Jan 1 – Dec 31

LOCATION: Perfect Cup, Country Club Centre, 3200 Island Hwy (V9T 1W1). Perfect Cup food concession is located in food court inside mall. Follow Island Hwy (19A) to Country Club Shopping Centre bounded by Norwell Dr and 107 St.
TRAIL: 5, 10, 12 km 
RATING:  1A, 2B, 2A
REGISTRATION: Mon – Sat: 08:30 – 17:30. Sun & Statutory holidays: 10:30 – 17:00. Closed Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and Easter Sunday.  5 km walk is on residential streets and along Long Lake. 10 km walk is along shores of Long Lake, around Diver Lake and through residential parks. Another 10 km is on trails in Linley Valley and around Lost Lake. One 12 km route follows E & N Parkway Trails through Beban Park. Another 12 km option goes on residential streets and up Sugar Loaf Mountain while another option goes through Beach Estates Park with waterfall. Washrooms available at start/finish.  *.

Walk can be done from dawn to dusk. First 5 km route follows a trail to Chesterman Beach and continues on beach. Lennard Island Lighthouse can be seen. Tofino Heritage walk passes historical buildings and sites in town of Tofino. Not suitable for wheelchairs.  Washrooms available at Visitor Centre at the start/finish of both loops.

 Walk can be done from dawn to dusk. Both routes go on Wild Pacific Trail on shoreline of west coast of Vancouver Island. Trail offers spectacular shoreline panoramas and seaward vistas. Not suitable for wheelchairs.  Washrooms available at start/finish.

VICTORIA

From downtown Victoria, take Blanshard St which becomes Vernon Ave and then Patricia Bay Hwy (Hwy 17).  Right on Royal Oak Dr. From Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal and Victoria International Airport: south on Patricia Bay Hwy (Hwy 17), right exit to Royal Oak Dr., left at light on overpass.
TRAIL: 12 routes up to a total of 80 km        6 – 10km, 1 - 9km, 1 - 11km            RATING: 2A / 2B / 3C
REGISTRATION: Mon – Fri: 09:30 – 21:00; Sat: 09:30 – 18:00; Sun: 08:30 – 17:00. Must register for the walk at the start point and must complete checkpoint answers. Routes go through trails, parks and streets of the Broadmead area. One Distance stamp on completing 80 km or terminating the walk and one event stamp for every 20 km completed. No time limit for completing all 80 km. Washrooms available at start/finish. *

Blenkinsop Lake 10 km goes on trails, through parks and lovely treed streets in the Broadmead residential area and a segment of the Lochside Trail that crosses the restored trestle bridge over Blenkinsop Lake – a favourite spot for bird watchers. Colquitz Creek 10 km includes a scenic walk on chip trails along Colquitz Creek and residential streets of Broadmead. One 5 km route goes around Rithet Bog [bird sanctuary] and residential streets. 2nd 5 km route goes through Broadmead residential area. Washrooms available at start/finish. *

From Victoria on Hwy 1 (Trans-Canada), take Colwood Exit (Hwy 14) to White Spot.  From ‘up island’ on Hwy 1, take Six Mile Rd. Exit to Hwy 14 to White Spot. Bus from downtown , #50 or #61 to Western Exchange. (White Spot is 1 block from Western Exchange).  
TRAIL:  5, 10, 15 km           RATING:  2B
REGISTRATION:  08:00 to dusk. Two 5 km routes available. Includes part of Galloping Goose Trail and parts of Royal Roads. Washrooms available at start/finish and at the museum under Hatley Castle. One of three YREs that can be linked together (083, 088 and 163) to make a longer walk. *

CVF Cenotaph Walk– in front of Legislature (Government & Belleville Streets) and First Scottish Regiment’s Cenotaph (beside Christ Church Cathedral, Quadra St, across from YM-YWCA).

LOCATION:  YM-YWCA, 851 Broughton St (V8W 1E5) is located at corner of Broughton and Quadra Streets (250-386-7511) in downtown Victoria, about 6 blocks from harbour, one block off main road from BC ferries and three blocks from city centre. Pay parking nearby. Free meter parking on Sundays and holidays.  Registration box  is in lobby beside the pop machine
TRAIL:  5, 10, 15 km              RATING:  1A
REGISTRATION:  Mon - Fri: 05:30 - 22:30; Sat: 07:30 - 21:00; Sun: 07:30-19:30. Holiday hours 08:00 - 16:00. Call to confirm holiday hours (250-386-7511). Closed Good Friday and Christmas Day. Scenic route includes city centre, parks, ocean views & residential areas.  Suitable for baby strollers and wheelchairs. Washrooms available at start/ finish, in Beacon Hill Park and Government House. *

LOCATION:  The Maritime Museum of BC, 28 Bastion Square (V8W 1H9) is located in downtown Victoria, approximately 2 blocks north of Parliament Buildings between the ‘Bay Centre’ and ‘Inner Harbour.’  From Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal and Victoria International Airport, south on Patricia Bay Hwy (17). This becomes Blanshard St. Continue on to downtown Victoria.
TRAIL:  10, 13 km       RATING:  2B
REGISTRATION:  Daily 10:00 to 17:00 except during the winter months. Call Museum at 250-385-4222 for latest information. 10 km route is a spectacular and scenic route that winds along ocean to Macauley Point, with an extra 3 km loop to Saxe Point. Both locations offer wonderful views of Fisgard Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse on the west coast of Canada, located at entrance to Esquimalt Harbour. Established in 1860, it was automated in 1929 and continues in operation today. For a closer look go to Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Park in Colwood. Admission to lighthouse included in the park entrance fee.  Washrooms available at start/finish. *

 From downtown Vancouver (West Georgia St), take the ‘blue bus’ #250. (40 mins). Or drive over the Lions Gate Bridge and along Marine Dr through West Vancouver to Community Centre (20 km). From BC Ferry terminal, pedestrians walk south and left on Keith Rd. Continue along gravel path and stairs to Marine Dr. Cross at crosswalk and left to Community Centre (1.5 km). From the Ferry terminal drive along Bay St., Nelson and Marine Dr, OR take #250 bus. 
TRAIL: 5, 10 km                  RATING: 2B
REGISTRATION: Mon - Fri 08:30 - 19:00; Sat 09:00 - 19:00; Sun 09:00 - 16:00. Closed Statutory Holidays. Part of route is on Trans Canada Trail with great water views south and west. Walk can be done from dawn to dusk. About 2 km of walk are in Lighthouse Park, including viewpoint overlooking Point Atkinson Lighthouse.Rest of route is on winding, hilly roads and paths through a residential neighbourhood with great views of Burrard Inlet. Not suitable for wheelchairs or baby strollers. Park may be closed during times of extreme fire hazard. Washrooms available at start/finish.

LOCATION: Delta Whistler Village Suites, 4308 Main St (V0N 1B4). Walk box is in back office, behind Reception. Take Sea-to-Sky Hwy (Hwy 99N) to Whistler, right at Village Gate Blvd, first left onto Northlands Blvd, first right onto Main St. Hotel is on the right. Pay parking. Suggest parking in free main lots at Lorimer Rd and Blackcombe Way, and walk through village to start. 
TRAILS: 5, 10 km        RATING: 2B
REGISTRATION: Daily: dawn to dusk. Ski: Jan 1- Apr 30 - Nov 1 -Dec 31. Lost Lake Walk May 1 - Oct 31. Alternate walk suitable all year. Call hotel 604-905-3987 (or Snow phone 604-687-7507) to confirm early and late ski conditions as weather conditions vary. Note there is a fee for the XC ski trail.
